Users are left to explore and discover features for themselves. Here we have listed 12 tips and tricks that can make using your iPhone a better experience. Part 2 with 12 more tips and tricks for the iPhone can be found here.
1. Shake to Undo
This is already set up in your iOS device. Say you are typing a text message, an email, or making a note and you happen to have mistaken a word. You can just shake your phone and the undo option will appear on the screen.
2. Send Receipts
This is same as the seen feature in Facebook Messenger where the sender is notified whenever the message has been read by the receiver. This only works for iMessage. If you want to enable or disable this feature, just go to Settings → Messages and look for “Send Read Receipts”.
3. Send as SMS When iMessage is Unavailable
When you are using iMessage to send a message, the receiver will not be able to receive it when he or she does not have internet access. In short, if you are using this, it is important that you enable this setting. Just go to Settings → Messages and look for “Send as SMS”.
4. Character Count
If you have no unlimited subscription for sending a text, every message that you sent is equivalent to an amount or it is simply using your regular electronic balance. Say for example 1 message cost a dollar. The maximum number of characters that you can send in a single transaction is 160. If it goes beyond that, it is automatically means 2 dollars. To be aware, enable “Character Count” in Settings → Messages.
5. Filter Unknown Senders
With the new update, users will be able to filter out people who are not in your contacts. To enable this, go to Settings → Messages and click “Filter Unknown Sender”.
6. Predictive Text
Predictive keyboard suggests possible words that you might type next. The iOS, base the words from your previous conversations. It learns from it. However this additional feature add lags when you are typing messages and it takes a significant space on the screen.
Personally I don’t rely on this. You have two ways to enable or disable this feature. First, you can go to Settings → General → Keyboard. Second, which is more handy for me is just hold the emoji icon and there you will see option to enable or disable it.
7. Get Domain Faster
You may have noticed this before, but wasn’t really sure where it occurred. Well this happens when you are on a browser or logging in to an account. If you hold the period on the lower right side of your keyboard you will see the different domain options to complete the name of the website that you are trying to type in or your email address perhaps.
8. Shortcuts (Apple logo)
Did you know that you can also send the Apple logo? Just Google “Apple logo for iPhone”, copy it a paste it in Settings → General → Keyboards → Shortcuts. Don’t forget to put a shortcut word to it. Apple for example. The next time you type apple, the logo will appear. Hit space bar and it will be pasted. Just recently, the Vulcan symbol “Live Long and Prosper” was created as well. Again, just Google it and do the same thing.
9. Check Timestamps
Want to check what time did you receive or what time did you sent the message? Just swipe to the left when you are on messages.
10. Lock Focus on Camera
If you got the perfect angle and exposure when you are taking a photo, press and hold on your focal point until you see an AE/AF Lock banner appear at the top of the screen.
11. Slow Mo Video
Slow motion feature in iPhone is amazing. You can shoot at 120 frames-per-second (fps). The problem is when you want to share the video or to save it in your computer. To save this as a slow motion video, you need to use an app. For my iPhone, I use TruSloMo. You can download the app on App Store.
12. Another Option to Take a Photo
With the introduction of iOS 7 and 8, new camera feature appeared. One is the timer and the other is by pressing the volume buttons.
