If you came here expecting to find some advice on the best tablet to buy for Christmas, you will be disappointed. If like me and have given up on Apple, there is basically no tablet worth buying this year. My disdain for Apple started this time last year. When I heard the iPad Mini 2 had the same specifications as the iPad Air, I thought it was the right time to replace my iPad 3. I went off searching for what turned out to be a piece of shit disguised in a pretty aluminium body finish.
Somehow a little voice in me told me the 1Gb RAM the iPad Mini 2 came with would not be enough to support Apple’s then newly released iOS 7 64bit. I convinced myself that Apple knew better and everything will turn out alright. Predominantly use my iPad for reading eBooks and news online, so how much RAM do I need, right? Oh how wrong was I. Never in my life have I paid money to get so much grief. I got screwed right in the face in broad daylight by Apple.
Long story short, if you tried opening more than 2 Safari tabs and when you return to previous tabs, the page would reload. If you own an iPad Mini 2 or an iPad Air, you would know what I’m talking about. You can read about the complains here, here and here. There are people that will argue that why do we need so many tabs open. I say to you this, if you have a 4 door car, try just using 1 door.
Calls to Apple support was equally sickening. They’ll make you do a bunch of stuff on your iPad to debug only to end the call to say it will be fixed in the next update. Starting with iOS 7, I’m now using iOS 8.1.1 and the problem is still here. Listening to Apple Support tell lies kinda reminded me of the cheap hookers when they told me I was the best they ever had.
I apologize for the deceiving title as it was not my intention but it seems this article is turning out to be a list of tablets not to buy this year. There is just no value in the market.
iPad Mini 3
If you’re thinking about getting the new iPad Mini 3, don’t do it. The new gold color and finger print identity sensor isn’t going to solve the problems that plagued the previous iPad Mini. The iPad Mini 2 and iPad Mini 3 is basically identical. Same process, same amount of RAM, same weight, everything is the same! What demon would do such a thing?
After reading rave reviews on the Nexus 7, this was the tablet that I really wanted. After waiting for a year, I was super excited when it was announced. Loaded with a dual core Tegra K1 Denver, NVIDIA’s 192-core Kepler GeForce GPU and a disappointing but acceptable 2Gb RAM, I was ready to buy it. Looking at the premium price that Google set, I thought I better do some research. After reading this bug tracker, I decided against getting the Nexus 9. It felt a lot like Deja Vu.
Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
Quad-core 2.5Ghz Krait 400, expandable memory using a microSD and 3Gb RAM and water and dust resistant. What more could I want? With 3Gb RAM I could have an amazing time with multiple PornHub tabs open while in the shower. Even though the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact had the worst display at 1920 x 1200 pixels I was willing to get it because it came with 3Gb RAM. The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is slim, light and looked amazing.
It was almost perfect, almost. The designer of Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact must have thought it was funny to leave the dock connector exposed. Once I saw the exposed dock connector, I could not un-see it.
I must have gotten a bout of OCD or something because I dropped the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact and ran off screaming.
Apple iPad Air 2
If you’re an Apple fan-boy, I guess you could get the iPad Air 2. With a triple core and 2Gb RAM, the iPad Air 2 looks pretty solid. I’ll just wait for the next Nexus tablet, given I don’t get a heart attack from all the stress while using my iPad Mini 2.
I forgot to include Samsung. Thanks to Marieanne for reminding me. I probably hate Samsung more than Apple so I will not even consider Samsung tablets at all. I do like Samsung Tv’s though..
