In this tutorial we are going to create a custom text frame. This utility is useful for anyone who would like their text to follow the outline of a certain shape. You can choose from pre-loaded shapes in Photoshop, or upload a custom shape of your own. To begin, you can start with any design as a background or just plain white.
Step 1: On the left hand panel, select the square (shape) and then click on the Custom Shape Tool.
Step 2: After clicking Custom Shape Tool, an option menu will come out, select path.
Step 3: Now a long bar menu appears where you can choose your shape [on the far right]. You can either use the Adobe Photoshop custom shape defaults or you can load your own shape by clicking on the wheel tool just to the left of Shape. Choose which shape tool suits your needs.
Step 4: Now click and drag the custom shape onto the background creating a path shape tool for your text. To maintain proportion, hold down the shift key or don’t if you have preferred dimensions to resize after placement. Holding the spacebar while dragging the shape will move the path being created to your preferred place.
Step 5: Select the text tool on the left hand menu. This opens a long option panel on top where you can choose the font type, size, color as well as toggle the character/paragraph menu.
The character/paragraph icon will toggle the panel [that is hidden by default] to pop out when clicked. For best results, choose justify and centered for your text/ paragraph formation.
Step 6: Now it is time to put some text inside the custom shape you have created. Click on text tool in the left panel once more. Now, when you hover inside the newly created custom shape the cursor will change to a circle with cursor line.
Step 7: Once you have clicked inside the custom shape, start typing. Notice your text will remain inside the parameters of the shape. You can still adjust font type, size color and spacing—even after you’re done typing the text—to see which options look best in the shape.
That’s it! Easy to do and now you have a custom shape filled with text that remains within the boundaries.
