Facebook is likely the most successful and talked about social network these days. One of the unique attributes of Facebook is its trend to roll-out new features fairly regularly. Averaging one minor update per month and one major update each quarter, the tweaks and changes have generally been accepted. But, with the omnipresent powerhouse essentially forcing new versions over old, some updates may be un-welcomed. This article details a way in which users can remove a few of the real-time notifications associated with Facebook’s chat function.
Motivations for Removing Typing and Seen on Facebook
Admit it. There are times when you don’t particularly want to talk to someone but, being the kind-hearted person you are, would rather not admit to such a harsh reality out loud. (Hence, the beauty of good ol’ text messaging on cell phones). The “seen” notification on Facebook messenger, however, puts you in one awkward situation. This annoying four-letter word lets the messenger know that you indeed have read their message but –perhaps through no fault of theirs—don’t want to reply immediately. Maybe you’d prefer to think things through, digest the message and respond thoughtfully. By the same token, maybe you’d like to hide the fact that you are a slow typist (or slow thinker) and wish you didn’t have to let the person know every time your fingertips hit the keyboard. The “typing” notification may give your messenger false hope since you may not really be ready to hit “send” just yet.
Have no fear, we are here to help you remove both of these seemingly inescapable upgrades. Note, though, the following method is not the only possible way to remove the notifications, just the way we think is most reliable. This is mainly due to the fact that the following script is available for nearly all of the most popular web browsers as well as having the added advantage of blocking nearly all of the ads on your internet browser.
Using AdBlock Plus to remove notifications from Facebook chat is simple and only requires adding a few other filters to the AdBlock Plus directory. By making the program think that both “seen” and “typing” notifications are in fact advertisements, we effectively block them.
Hiding “seen” with Adblock Plus
If you haven’t already, first download AdBlock Plus using the links below. Then ensure AdBlock Plus is running by visiting a few heavily advertised websites.
Step one: There should be an AdBlock Plus button near the URL bar. Right click on the button and select options.
Step two: Go to the customize field and then click on the Edit button.
Step three: In this field, copy the following web address:
Step four: Save the customization.
Step one: Navigate the AdBlock Plus preferences by right clicking on the icon. Click on Add Your Own Filters.
Step two: In the smaller subject box, copy the web address:
Step three: Click the add filter button.
Step one: Right click on Adblock Plus icon and choose options.
Step two: Hit customize, then click edit.
Step three: Copy over the following URL
Step four: Click the save button.
Step one: Click on the AdBlock Plus icon and choose the Filter Preferences option. [A shortcut is to use ctrl+shift+f].
Step two: Navigate to Custom Filters and click Add Filter Group.
Step three: Enter the name “Seen and Typing remover” with no quotations. Hit both ctrl+R.
Step four: Now choose Add Filter and enter the following url:
In all cases, restart the browser after editing so that the filters go into effect before you continue on to Facebook.
Hiding “Typing” with Adblock Plus
The above mentioned cases will remove the “seen” notification only. In order to remove the “typing” notification – repeat the above steps but replace the URL with:
This essentially replaces the “mercury/change_read_status” portion with “messaging/typ.”
Again, restart the browser after adding the filter. Make sure to add these filters again after every AdBlock Plus update, even if the filter already exists. This ensures the most up-to-date blocking and refreshes the script that runs the filter(s). You can now rest a little easier with less pressure to respond expediently and/or procrastinate to your heart’s desire without giving a lame excuse as to why you didn’t respond for two weeks.
