Helium is an app developed by the renowned android developer Koushik Dutta, aka Koush. The app allows android users to backup and sync their apps and data on their SD card or in a cloud storage. Helium does not require root permissions to run, i.e. you can successfully backup all your android apps and app data when preparing to root your device using Helium. The app comes in two versions: free and premium. The free version comes with ads and limits backups to the phone’s SD card whilst the premium version comes with features like auto backup schedules, no ads, cloud backup and restore. The steps below will guide you to successfully install and run this amazing app on your android phone and pc.
Step 1: Download Helium from Google Play on your android phone.
Step 2: Download and install Helium for your computer (Windows, Mac, Linux) here
Step 3: Start Helium from your android phone. The following messages will show up
Step 4: Click on OK to start the enabling process. The app will prompt you to start the desktop application and connect your android device to your PC.
Step 5: If the Helium desktop app starts correctly, connect your phone via a USB cable to your PC and do nothing. You should however see a green check symbol on the pc app if the enabling process is successful.
Step 6: You should also see a confirmation on the Helium app on your android phone. Unplug your USB cable and select the apps you want to back app.
Step 7: Take note of “App Data Only (smaller backups)” Once selected, helium will only backup the app data of your apps. This will require you to download the apps again when restoring. If you want to back up both apps and data, DO NOT SELECT this option.
Step 8: Select the apps you want to backup and advance. However, Helium cannot backup some selected apps, as those apps does not allow the process. Helium will notify you if you have any of such apps.
Step 9: When the backup process is completed, do copy the “carbon” folder on your SD card to your computer via USB, in case you are planning to format your device, flash a new rom or unlock your HTC device bootloader.
