There are two different ways to install apps on MAC; the best, easiest and reliable way is to install the apps directly from the app store. The second way is find the apps from the third party providers and installing manually. Manual installation of apps can be done using the DMG installer or from the PKG installer. This article provides the general information on how to install, remove or repair the apps on MAC OSx.
Every laptop or desktop using MAC OSx has the App Store pre-installed on it. Using the app store the users can purchase and install the apps easily. The process of installation is really simple with the App Store. Users have to create the account for App store, after creating the account users can search and install the apps of their choice. Once the app is found in the App store, there will be a button indicating whether its a free or paid App. Clicking on that button will lead to install/buy app green button. Clicking on the green button installs the app on your MAC. The App store is a great way to discover the new apps as it clearly publishes the apps based on categories and also they show the top trending apps installed all over the world.
Uninstalling the apps that are bought from the app store is simple. First the user has to open the finder and select the application from the list on left side and then the find the app to uninstall, and then just delete it. The App store maintains the list of apps users have purchased. In case if you need the app in future, then one can install it again without paying money again. To fix or repair the app in case if it’s broken is fairly simple. User just has to uninstall it and reinstall it again from the App Store. You can read about the basic commands to operate your Mac here.
The App store also provides periodic updates to the apps, so the users have to check the update tab in the App Store and if there is any updates for the apps purchased then the updates can be performed by pressing the update button. The App store will ask for the user credentials whenever it’s required for authentication.
DMG installer is the most commonly used installer for the MAC. DMG file is a container file and installing applications from this requires users to mount the DMG file and move its contents to the application folder of MAC. This is very different as compared to the installation process in windows OS. DMG files are disk image files, and in order to mount the DMG files we just have to double click it. The installation process after mounting is as follows:
- If the window also contains a shortcut icon to “Applications”, drag and drop the app onto the shortcut.
- If not, double-click the mounted volume on your desktop and drag the app icon from there to the “Applications” icon in the Finder sidebar.
After the installation, un-mount the DMG file and the DMG file can be deleted. The un-installation process is similar to the uninstalling process mentioned in the first section. To fix or repair the app in case if it’s broken is fairly simple. User just has to uninstall it and reinstall it again from the DMG file.
Unlike DMG installer, PKG files are similar to the windows installation. PKG installer is not so popular with the MAC software distribution. To install apps from PKG file, we just have to double click and then follow the on screen instructions that are similar to windows software installation process. This might need administration privilege rights to install, and hence MAC OSx may ask for the administrator password for security purposes. The installation steps involve the license acceptance and the disk selection for the installation. The installed apps can be found in the application folder and application Launchpad of the MAC.
Un-installing the apps that are installed using the PKG file is not simple and the users has to follow the uninstall guide provided by the app creator/ software provider. The un-installation process in this case generally involves manual deletion of the application and its related files, preferences and license files. For example the following link gives information about how to uninstall the Microsoft office completely, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768
To fix or repair the app in case it’s broken is not at all simple. The best way to get the app working normally again is to follow the uninstall procedure provided and to re-install the app again.
