The Macintosh family has been added another one to its line-up. From the original three computers namely MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and iMac a new device was introduced. You would probably wonder at first what could possibly the name of it. Well surprisingly it is like the baby of all Mac’s. Its name is “MacBook”. That’s it!
It has six major changes. That includes an all new keyboard, 12” display, force touch trackpad, and an amazing innovation on the inside. It is the most efficient notebook apple has ever created. They were able to reinvent every technology in it to deliver something that didn’t exist. One if its perks is its thinness in every angle. It is only 13.1 mm thin compared to the 17.3 mm MacBook Air. It is an amazing 24% thinner. A huge difference for the notebook market. Aside from that, the new MacBook weighs just 2 pounds. It is in fact the lightest Mac computer that apple has made. Twice the weight of the iPad Air 2.
But of course you can’t go that thin without making any sacrifices at all. It was too thin for a normal rectangular battery cells so what they decided to use another type of battery. It was also too thin for a backlight for the apple logo at the back that you see in the rest of apple laptop so what they did is replace it with a reflective one with no backlight that has been on our iPhones and iPads already. The biggest inconvenience for this laptop is using a lot of adaptors. You won’t be able to use a mouse and charge it at the same time anymore. Furthermore, you can’t upgrade anything on the inside. To make it worse, it only uses 480p webcam on the front. Not even 720p.
Okay, enough with that. Here are the six major changes that I was talking about:
Full size keyboard
In the new MacBook, the keyboard goes all the way to the edge which basically defined the size of the notebook. It is an all new keyboard because they moved to an entire new design which led them to an entire new invention. They switched from the traditional scissor mechanism to butterfly mechanism. According to Apple, it was 4x more stable and 40% thinner which allowed them to make a thinner keyboard. Also it has a 17% larger cap with individual LEDs for each key resulting to a more precise in its illumination.
The display of this notebook is even better compared to the MacBook air. Aside from the fact that it moves closer to edges (maximizing the size), it has an amazing 2304 x 1440 display. And yes it has a retina display. Do the math and you will get 3,313,440 pixels. Moreover, it consumes 30% less energy at the same brightness level with a larger aperture in each pixel.
The trackpad on this notebook has also been reinvented. With the introduction of their force touch trackpad you can configure it to have a stiffer and softer fell. You can click anywhere. It uses a taptic engine to provide feedback. And with that, they added some new features. Say when you are in a word, when you force touch a word you automatically get Wikipedia to look up its meaning. In mail, it will show you the map when you force touch an address. When you are viewing a video, just press a little harder on the fast forward icon and it will go faster.
The board of the MacBook was further simplified. For the first time in the history of Macintosh, a fan was no longer needed. It is also the first fan less notebook on the market to date. It is 67% smaller with intel core M 5th Generation. It has a processing speed of up to 1.3 GHz which can turbo boost up to 2.9 GHz. What is amazing is that it only consumes 5W
They also changed the battery. Technically because they won’t be able to maximize the space. Instead of the regular square battery, they used a terraced, contoured one. Not only that it’s different from the rest of the existing notebooks, it also offered 35% more capacity. On paper it has 9h for wireless web browsing and 10h for iTunes movie playback
This new Mac offers only one port, USB-C. Apple envisioned the future with wireless technology so instead of making a lot of ports available, they only used one. It uses WiFi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0.
This insanely thin design leads to these six major changes on the Mac. Prices at $1299 for 256 GB SSD and $1599 for 512 SSD. All of them has an 8 GB of RAM. Overall it has awesome display. It’s probably the sexiest laptop because it’s thin, light, and portable. On the other hand, it’s not a powerful machine at all. Don’t expect that this would work well for you if you are editing videos or photos. In my opinion, this is just for an average user. It is still the first generation so expect big changes on the second generation, apple is already working on that.
